I am awesome at ____________.

I am awesome at planning a dinner party.
I am awesome at singing Gershwin.
I am awesome at shopping with coupons.

Ask someone near you right now to list three things they are awesome at in life.
Did they become instantly uncomfortable? Shy? Unsure?

I often ask new students this very question. It helps me to get to know them better and understand how much confidence they possess. I find most students have a hard time answering this question.

Virtually zero of the students ever even mention being good at anything related to music! Why is this?

I’ve noticed that asking this question instantly causes the student to break eye contact. Many students also do not repeat back to me ” I am awesome at _________.” They use words like “sort of” and “kinda.” It’s hard to be that sure about anything, right? Wrong.

Performing takes a great deal of confidence and a healthy dose of self assurance. The well balanced performer knows all of their greatest strengths and weaknesses and how they effect the task at hand.

If you don’t know that you are good at poaching eggs than how could you possibly know that you are good at singing Frank Sinatra songs?

Ask the question. Ask your friend. Ask you neighboor. Then ask yourself. We all deserve to know exactly what we are good at in this world.

YOU are awesome. Pass it on.
