February’s Student-of- the-Month!

We know you were all wondering when we would announce February’s Student-of -the-Month! Why did we wait until February 17th to make the announcement?

Today marks a very special day in our student, Joe Hawryluk’s life. Five years ago today Joe received a heart transplant surgery, a day that changed his life forever. Today we celebrate his life and great dedication to music. Joe has been a student at Main Stage Studios since January of 2012. He has studied voice with MSS instructor Leah Wietig for the last three years. He has attended lessons weekly, making great progress in his personal practice sessions in between. His growth and dedication to his music is an inspiration to myself and others. In addition to private voice instruction Joe has also worked with acting coach Meaghan Randall and piano/theory instructor Matt Marco, both instructors at the studio. In the past three years Joe has made incredible strides as a musician and as a result of his hard work has had the honor of singing bass with the Buffalo Chapter Barbershop Harmony Society and the Friends of Harmony Chapter Barbershop Harmony Society.

Joe has performed in many of the Main Stage Studios recitals. His favorite performing moment was singing a duet with his wife Judie on stage in the Mary Seaton Room at Kleinhans Music Hall. Joe also enjoys singing bass during all of his barbershop concerts.

When asked who has been an inspiration to him in his musical career Joe says, “I have always played piano and guitar – but didn’t sing that well. I retired as a Child Psychologist in 2004. My “super bass” cousin Zenon Deputat, always told me “You can do it “(sing that is). So after my heart transplant surgery at Cleveland Clinic (February 17, 2010), I decided to see if I could do it! I now sing bass in Barbershop Harmony with the Buffalo Chapter Barbershop Harmony Society and the Friends of Harmony Chapter Barbershop Harmony Society.”

In addition to making music Joe enjoys gardening and working around his house. He enjoys listening to music by the Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Some words of advice from Joe for others thinking of pursuing voice lessons, “Try it – you CAN do it!”

Joe will continue his diligent work singing bass in barbershop harmony quartets. We appreciate his dedication to his work and his great story of perseverance.

Today we celebrate you Joe! Keep up the great work!
